TRENDS IN ATOMIC RADIUS ACROSS THE PERIOD :

➡️ Atomic radius decreases across a period.

Because within the period, the outer electrons are in the same valence shell and the effective nuclear charge increases resulting in the increased attraction of electrons to nucleus.

TRENDS IN ATOMIC RADIUS DOWN THE GROUP :

➡️Atomic radius increases down the group.

Because down the group, electrons are added to the next energy level due to which the inner energy levels filled with electrons serve to shield the outer electrons from pull of nucleus.
