  • Lunar eclipses. First, they saw that during a lunar eclipse the shadow of the Earth always had a round profile. This happened regardless of the time of night that the eclipse occurred.

  • Star patterns. The second observation is how the pattern of stars changes as you move north and south. If you were to stand at the North Pole, Polaris (the North Star), would be directly overhead.

Dense CO2 based atmosphere of Venus makes its surface hotter than that of Mercury, a planet much closer to the Sun. That’s an example of extreme greenhouse effect.

Gas giants, Saturn and Jupiter, practically consist of their atmospheres. Ice giants, Uranus and Neptune, are pretty close to it, although they do seem to have something resembling surface.

8. Two proofs about the shape of the Earth are :-

  • The eclipses of the moon are caused by the Earth coming in between the Sun and the moon. The earth's shadow on the moon is always round, which would be true only if the earth was spherical. If the earth had been a flat disk, the shadow would have been a Flat disk, the shadow would have been elongated and elliptical, unless the eclipse always occurred at a time when the sun was directly under the center of the disk.
  • Secondly, The north Star appears lower in the sky when viewed in the South than it did in more northern regions. Since the North Star lies over the North Pole, it appears to be directly above an observer at the North Pole, but to someone looking from the equator, it appears to lie just at a horizon.
