Answer:
Firstly, most authors write in silence, that is omitting surrounding sounds impinging on the writer, or self talk out loud aiding in getting the words just right. Other from this writing is a quiet, solitary business.
Secondly, when we read we may read out loud, in order to catch the nuances of the written word, we may read to an audience as in a poetry reading. Actively reading involves the vocal cords and likely bodily movement, Mirroring enables us to enter the world of the fictional character, or poetic diction and be emotionally affected ‘as if’ we were participants in the action. We do this both in reading and in participating with other folk in everyday life, such that we can ‘get a feel’ for where they are at by the simple act of observing and mirroring. This was how we learned to understand the behaviour and meanings of other’s actions both for good or ill. And this capacity, learned over a lifetime is the knowledge we call up from memory when reading and empathising with characters in literature. This may occur in both vocal readings as well as silent readings. When we were young we often read words out loud thereby understanding their shape and meaning, as we sought to express it in speech acts. However, as we age and our competence rises, we generally read silently. We no longer are reading words but scanning phrases and sentences, now we are reading for context, based on what we have already read and understood. The words are still the vehicle to meaning but we are immersed in the action and what is to occur next. So we are using memory and anticipating what we think may happen next, as in music surprises catch us and we get sense of delight at the turn of an unexpected phrase. We are pattern seekers but variation of the right kind intrigues us and delights us, that is one of the pleasures of reading or listening to music.
