according to Pythagoras theorem

the square of the two sides of a triangle in a right angle is equal to the square of hypotenuse.

let the height be x

 {x}^{2}  +  {8}^{2}  =  {17}^{2}

 {x}^{2}  + 64 = 289

 {x}^{2}  = 289 - 64

 {x}^{2}  = 225

x = 15 \:(as \:  {15}^{2}  = 225)

base =8

height=15

area \: of \: triangle =  \frac{1}{2}  \times base \times height

 \frac{1}{2}  \times 8 \times 15 \\  \\  \frac{1}{2} \times 120

 \frac{120}{2}  = 60

hope this helps you
