In Kolbe's electrolysis of CH,COONa ethane is obtained at the ANODE.

Justification for the above statement:

  • Electrolysis is the process in which an electric current is passed through the substance /aqueous solution to bring about a chemical change.
  • The method is carried out in a container known as electrolytic cell.
  • The electrolytic cell has two oppositely charged material called electrodes.
  • The negative charged is the anode and positive charged is the cathode. The solution is called the electrolyte, it has positive charged ions anion which is attracted towards the anode and negative charged ions cation which is attracted towards the cathode.
  • In kolbe' electrolysis, the monocarboxylic acids' salts are electrolysed to give alkanes as the product. This is the method of manufacturing ethane.
  • Reaction during electrolysis:
  • 2R-COONa + 2H2O electrolysis >> R-R + 2CO2 + 2NaOH

  • At anode
  • At anode2CH3COO- - 2e-⟶2CH3COO⟶2CH3 + 2CO2
  • At anode2CH3COO- - 2e-⟶2CH3COO⟶2CH3 + 2CO22CH3⟶C2H6 ( ethane produced)

  • At Cathode
  • 2Na+ + 2e-⟶2Na
  • 2Na+ + 2e-⟶2Na2Na + H2O⟶2NaOH
