Given :   The price of selling one unit of a product when x units are demanded given by the equation p= 4000 - 2x

The fixed costs of the product are *20,000 and 1484 per unit are paid for

the product to place in a store.

To Find :  the level of sales at which the company expects to cover

its costs.

Solution:

Let say  x units are sold

Then revenue  = units * price

= x * ( 4000 - 2x)

= 4000x - 2x²

Cost Price = 20000 + 1484x

the level of sales at which the company expects to cover its costs is called Break even point

Hence 20000 + 1484x  = 4000x - 2x²

=> 2x²  - 2516x  + 20000 = 0

=> x² - 1258x  + 10000 = 0

=> x² - 1250x -8x  + 10000 = 0

=> (x - 1250)(x - 8) = 0

=> x = 1250  or x = 8

Level of sale  is  8 units  or 1250 units
