Answer:assume the work done to be 60 units which is the lcm of 20 and 12

so X completes the work in 20 days that means he does 3 units of work in one day(60/20=3)

and similarly Y completes the work in 12 days that means he does 5 units of work in one day(60/12=5)

now X starts the work and works alone for 4 days that means he completes 4*3=12 units of work in 4 days

now the remaining work is 60–12=48

now Y joins X so total units that can be completed in 1 day =3+5=8

now the remaining work can be completed by X and Y in 6 days that is 48/8=6

so total days required to complete the work is 4+6=10 days

so your answer will be 10 days

hope it helps
