let's take the case of chromium i.e., atomic number 24
so, its electronic configuration should be 4s2 - 3d4 ( bcoz of aufbau principle...i.e., nearly same energy vale phle fill honge )
but its electronic configuration is 4s1 - 3d5 ....means one electron from 4s subshell gets shifted to 3d subshell...and this happens bcoz by doing this 3d has 5 electrons which means a half filled subshell
we all know that a fully filled or half filled subshell is always more stable...
so, now atom can exchange 6 electrons with each of the orbital of s and p subshell...
