all the wisdom in the world, and be the only wise person in the world. If he succeeded in this
ambition, he would then be so wise that everybody, including great kings and aged councillors
would have to consult him whenever they wanted to solve any problem, however, small. He
thought too, that perhaps he could charge a great deal of money for giving his advice.
He set out to collect all the wisdom in the world, and as he gathered each piece he put it into
a large gourd, the opening of which he stopped up tightly with a roll of leaves. This took a long
time, and when tortoise thought he had collected all there was, he decided to hide the gourd of
