Solution-

(Situation1)

Number of pipes used=8

Time taken to fill the tank with given number of pipes=1hr 20min

=(1×60min)+20min

=60min +20min

=80min

(Situation2)

Number of pipes used now=6

Time taken to fill the tank=(80min×8)/6 [Less pipes ,more time]

=640min/6

=106.67min

Answer:6 pipes will take 106.67 min to fill the tank.

6 pipes can fill the tank in 1.78 hours.

Given:

  • 8 pipes are required to fill a tank in 1 hour 20 minutes.

To find:

  • How long will it take if only 6 pipes of the same types are used?

Solution:

Concept to be used:

  1. Apply unitary method.
  2. 1 hour = 60 min

Step 1:

Find time taken by 1 pipe.

8 pipes take 1 hour 20 min.

8 pipes takes = 60 min + 20 min = 80 min

So,

1 pipe will take more times, i.e. 8 times more.

Thus,

1 pipe will take = 80×8 =640 min

Step 2:

Find the time taken by 6 pipes.

As, same 6 pipes takes 6 times less time.

So,

Six pipes will take = 640/6 min

= 106.67 min

Thus,

Six pipes will take 1.78 hours to fill the tank.
