Answer:

Solution-

(Situation1)

Number of pipes used=8

Time taken to fill the tank with given number of pipes=1hr 20min

=(1×60min)+20min

=60min +20min

=80min

(Situation2)

Number of pipes used now=6

Time taken to fill the tank=(80min×8)/6 [Less pipes ,more time]

=640min/6

=106.67min

Answer:6 pipes will take 106.67 min to fill the tank.

Let the desired time to fill the tank be x minutes.

In 20 mins a tank is filled by 8 pipes

Lesser the number of pipes more will be the time required by it to fill the tank.

So, this is a case of inverse proportion.

Hence, 20 × 8 = x × 6

⇒ 5

20 × 8 = x

⇒x = 160

Thus, the time is taken to fill the tank by 6 pipes is 160 minutes or 2 hours 30 mins
