The poet becomes nostalgic hearing the patter of raindrops on the roof. The patter evokes the memories of  his mother who used to tuck her children before going to bed. She would look at her children lovingly each night while tucking them in the bed. She would do so as she was going to be separated from her beloved children temporarily. This showed her love for her children.
