8. Practical based question
An experiment was performed in which an iron nail was dipped in copper sulphate solution,
After sometime, the nail was removed and a copper wire was dipped in the same solution
The solution was observed after sometime.
a. Complete the following observation table:
Solution of
Color change if any
Copper sulphate and iron
Iron sulphate and copper
C.
b. Write word equations for both the reactions.

Observation table :

\begin{tabular}{|l|l|}\cline{1-2}Types of solution & Colour change (if any)\\ \cline{1-2} A. Copper sulphate and iron  & Light green \\ & \\ B. Iron sulphate and copper & No change \\ \cline{1-2}\end{tabular}

Word equation for both reactions :

Reaction 1 :

Iron + Copper sulphate \longrightarrow Iron sulphate + Copper

Reaction 2 :

Iron sulphate + Copper \rightarrow Iron sulphate + Copper

Reaction 2 will not occur as Iron is more reactive than copper , so copper could not replace iron from iron sulphate .

Type of reaction between copper sulphate solution and iron : Displacement reaction .

Displacement reaction : A reaction in which an element replaces the less reactive element from its compound forming another compound with the anion is called single displacement reaction .
