1. Ring - O - Bells - is a name of a Restaurant where Mr Abel Marryweather, the Grandpa spend most of his time with his friends.

2. They assumed that the old man came in as merry as a sand boy going round to the Ring - O - Bells as he might have a drink and spend a good time with his friends, gossiping others.

3. As merry as a sand boy - It refers that he is extremely happy and care free about his surroundings.

4. Irony in the statement-This statement refers to Mr Abel Merryweather who may have gone to Ring-O-Bells after paying his insurance premium. Everyone in the house is happy hearing this. This statement is spoken by Mrs Slater who is very materialistic and wants her share in her father's property. After sometime, when Victoria comes she informs that grandpa has not paid insurance premium which makes everyone angry. This is the irony of this statement.
