\mathfrak{\blue{Ans.}} Our skin is covered with a special oil called sebum which protects our skin. When we remain in water for a long time, then this sebum washes away, the water can make its way into the outer layer of skin. The water does this by osmosis. The movement of water from higher concentration to lower takes place. Water in pool is much huge than us, so the movement of water takes place in our skin which makes it wrinkly.

The Phenomenon used in this activity is called osmosis. It is the spontaneous passage or diffusion of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane. The types are:

  • Hypertonic Osmosis
  • Hypotonic Osmosis
  • Isotonic osmosis

Answer:

Fingers wrinkle after swimming because the water enters the skin’s outer surface. The skin is naturally present with the skin oil called sebum. This oil lubricates and protects the skin and also makes the skin waterproof initially. But with prolonged swimming or staying under water, the sebum gets washed away and the skin surface then tends to absorb water.

The phenomenon exhibited in this situation called osmosis, where water enters from a region of "higher concentration" to a region of "lower concentration" through a "semi-permeable membrane". The skin’s outer surface allows water to enter and get stored in the outer layer. The skin swells and gets raisin like appearance because of water getting stored in a random pattern, some areas swell and others do not swell. This uneven swelling causes wrinkles. This entire process of absorption of water by osmosis is controlled by the "sympathetic nervous system".
