E-commerce in pandemic times
in these pandemic times, as people have begun tonicept social distancing as the new way of life, there has been a major shift from
e-commerce options for purchasing items that they would otherwise have preferred to handpick, bargain and purchase in person.
Most of us see this trend as business being served on a platter to those providing e-commerce services. This sadly is not the
whole truth. The strict measures that were imposed world-wide on most businesses except essential services, has forced many
e-commerce has also been significantly impacted. In the wake of this situation maintaining business continuity and bringing the
businesses to close temporarily and e-commerce was no exception. Most e-commerce services were temporarily suspended to
void the spread of the virus from one person to another
. Though the e-commerce sector has not seen a total loss of business like
business on track is a challenge that all e-commerce service providers are struggling to deal with.
The biggest lesson that the pandemic has taught us has been that anticipating the future is not always possible. The only way
that businesses can weather
the storm is by planning, and then reviewing and improvising their plans, in shorter cycles than they
were used to practising before the
Corona pandemic. The need to shift to a work from home' style of working has highlighted how
crucial both communication and technology are to the smooth functioning of any organisation.
Innovation is another key factor for the e-commerce sector to sprint back to normalcy. Bringing in new products and services that
would be useful to customers in the altered 'normal situation is very necessary. For e-commerce service providers
, communicating
with customers regarding the new products and the safety features of the delivery process is important
. The shift from 'hand
delivery to contactless delivery is an example of innovation in the way the service is being delivered. Any business that is flexible
and adapts quickly to changes is the one that has the potential to stay in the reckoning for a longer period of time.
Regardless of the situation, remaining optimistic about the future is what is best for all entrepreneurs and business leaders. After
all the year 2020 does make us feel like we are living in unprecedented times.​
