Compound is a pure substance which is made from atoms of different elements combined together in a fixed ratio by mass. It can be decomposed into simpler constituents using chemical reactions. Example: water H2O

2H2 ( g ) + O2 ( g) ---------> 2H2O ( l )

Compounds have different properties as compared to the constituents from which it is made.

Hydrogen is a gas , oxygen is a gas whereas water formed is in liquid state.

Also hydrogen does not support combustion, oxygen supports combustion whereas water stops combustion.
