The root hair is suitable for absorbing water from the soil because they are thin walled extensions of epidermal cells of root. Also they provide a very large surface area for absorption. The pathway in which water reaches xylem through root hairs without crossing cytoplam is known as apoplast pathway.

In this pathway, water moves through the intercellular spaces without crossing the cell membrane.
