Five in series makes 3+3+3+3+3=15. Three in parallel makes 1/3+1/3 +1/3=1. Put the parallel group in series with the five others to result in a total resistance of 15 +1 =16 ohms. Of course in reality one would find it easier to combine a 15 and 1 ohm resistor. Particularly as the nearest available buy for 3 ohms is 3.3.
