10 litres of water must be added to get a mixture of milk and water in the ratio of 3:1.

Step-by-step explanation:

The total quantity of the mixture = 80 litres

The ratio of milk to water in the 80 litres of mixture = 27:5

So,

The quantity of milk = [27/(27+5)] * 80 = [27/32]* 80 = 67.5 litres

And

The quantity of water = 80 – 67.5 = 12.5 litres

The ratio of milk and water in the new mixture = 3:1

Let the required quantity of water to be added to get the new mixture to be “x” litres

According to the question, we can write the eq. as,

[67.5] / [12.5 + x] = 3/1

⇒ 67.5 = 3 * [12.5 + x]

⇒ 67.5 = 37.5 + 3x

⇒  3x = 30

x = 10 litres

Thus, 10 litres more water is to be added to get the new mixture.
