80 people in a colony were surveyed and it was found that for every 6 people who read The Hindu’, there are 4 people who read Times of India’. For every 9 people who read The Hindu 1 there are 3 people who read both of them. Further, the number of people who read both of them is same as those who read neither of them.

Answer:

Explanation:

First of all calculating the number of subscribers for each newspaper;

No. of people who subscribed to The Hindu = (60*80)/100 = 48.

No. of people who subscribed to Regional Newspaper = (80*80)/100 = 64.

No. of people who subscribed to TOI = (70* 80)/100 = 56.

Total number of newspapers subscribed by all residents = 48+64+56 which is = 168.

Now to find the least case

Assume a scenario in which we have 168 newspapers in hand, which are to be distributed among 80 residents or families. First we give each resident a newspaper each. Now we are left with 88( 168 -80) newspapers. We now distribute a second newspaper to each resident. This leaves us with 8( 88-80) newspapers left in hand to be distributed. Which means 8 residents or families have to subscribe to 3 newspapers each, in order for us to be able distribute all 168 newspapers among the 80 residents. Hence the answer is 8. :)
