Step-by-step explanation:

Let the total capacity of the tank be x litres

As per statement tank is three-eighths full of water.

Tank is 3/8 full means the water in the tank is 3x/8 litres

Thus the water the tank can hold in empty space

x - 3x / 8

(8x-3x) / 8

5x/8

It would take another 45 litres of water to fill it. Means

5x/8 = 45

Cross multiplication

5x = 45 × 8

5x = 360

x = 360/5

x = 72

The tank can hold altogether 72 litres of water
