A bolt connecting the main and rear frame of a mountain bike requires a torque of 15Nm
to tighten. If you are capable of applying 40 N of force to a wrench in any given direction
what is the minimum length of the wrench that will result in the required torque?

Given:

  • Torque = 15 Nm
  • Force = 40 N

To Find:

  • The minimum length of the wrench(displacement)

Solution:

The formula of torque is given as,

Torque = force × displacement → {equation 1}

On substituting the given values in equation 1 we get,

⇒ 15 = 40 × displacement

Rearranging the above formula in terms of displacement

⇒ displacement = 15/40 {dividing the terms}

⇒ displacement = 3/8 m or 0.375 m {dividing the terms}

∴ The minimum length of the wrench should be 0.375 m
