India is a country which is home to more than 400 million children, i.e, roughly over 39% of the population consists of children below the age of 18 years. But most of these children face a variety of issues that hamper their growth and development. They are deprived of their basic rights i.e. to survival, development, protection and participation.
Recognising the severity of the issues faced by the underprivileged children in India, the late founder of CRY, Mr. Rippan Kapur started the organisation with the mission of bringing about a lasting change in the lives of children. From one man’s vision, has grown a nationwide movement that has made incredible progress with the help of donors and enthusiastic volunteers.
CRY has a unique way of working where it does not directly utilise the funds that it receives. Instead CRY opts to be a link between other grass roots level organisations working all over the country for underprivileged children and those who can provide resources. This unique method has helped CRY support many projects that have focus areas towards Child Rights, all over the country. This way, CRY has ensured that the resources it receives have reached even the most remote corners of India.
CRY’s main objective is to ensure the fundamental rights of all children, irrespective of their caste, gender and religion. There are four rights as mentioned in the Indian Constitution as well. They are:
1.Right to Survival
This includes the right to quality nutrition, health care and sanitation. CRY helps ensure this through immunisation drives, medical camps and checking the functioning of and establishing Primary Health Care Centres in every village and town.
2.Right to Protection
The right to protection states that all children must be nurtured and protected from any form of discrimination, criminal practices, harmful influences and exploitation. By creating awareness about child trafficking forced child labour and other such issues that children face, CRY has helped mobilise communities to fight these evils. CRY-supported projects help teach down and rehabilitate victims and ensure that they go to school and have a chance to live a normal life.
3.Right to Development
Every child has the right to free and quality education. CRY recognises that education is the main tool of change and helps ensure that children across CRY-supported areas have access to quality schools that have good teachers and infrastructure as well.Through various campaigns, CRY has tried to spread awareness about the importance of child education as well. Thousands of children have so far been able to realise their dream of going to school and dream of a better future for themselves and their families.
4.Right to Equality
Every child is ensured equal opportunities irrespective of gender, religion, caste or colour. CRY helps protect children from various types of discrimination in India. From children of Dalits and tribals to the girl child, many children are still denied access to education and sometimes even survival due to gender or caste.
CRY addresses issues such as female foeticide and girl child education through awareness camps and other methods to ensure that the girl child is protected and given equal opportunities to grow and develop as other children.
