Explanation:

A group of cells form a tissue which performs a specific function. A group of tissue forms an organ and in the same way, a group of organs form an organism. That is why cells are considered as the basic structural units of living organisms.

CELL , THE BASIC UNIT OF ORGANISMS:

  • First of all, cells are the structural and functional unit of an organism.

  • Structural unit: This is because, a group of cells performing a similar function will give rise to tissue, a group of such tissues will give rise to an organ. A few origans will then give rise to an organ system in an individual.

  • Functional unit: This is because, all the preliminary functions are performed by a cell, i.e. SYNTHESIS of proteins, cell division, etc. [For example: when a part of liver gets resected, the remaining liver cells divide (hyperplasia) to regenerate back the whole liver]

  • The pre-existing cells shall give rise to new cells performing same function as the parent cells.
