$x+y=9\\xy=16$

Required to find:-

$x^2+y^2$

Procedure:-

$x^2+y^2=(x+y)^2-2xy$

Since we know the value of  $x+y$  and $xy$, let us put their values in this equation.

$x^2+y^2=(9)^2-2*16=81-32=49$

∴ $x^2+y^2=49$
