The British had annexed the kingdom of Awadh on the charges of misgovernance. The Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was dethroned and exiled to Calcutta. British wrongly assumed that the Nawab was unpopular ruler. On the contrary he was widely loved and when he left there was widespread grief, anger and resentment in the people of Awadh.
The Allies of the Nawab of Awadh joined hands to revolt against the British and their injustice.
The Taluqdars were dotted with the estates and for many generations controlled land and power in Awadh. However after the annexation of Awadh the British were unwilling to tolerate the power of Taluqdars. They were disarmed and their forts were destroyed. The British accused them of fraud and took their land away. When the revolt of 1857 broke out they took part in large numbers.
The dispossession of Taluqdars meant the breakdown of entire social order. Many Taluqdars were generous figures to the peasants. Now under the British rule the peasants were exposed to over assessment of revenue and inflexible methods o collection.
The sepoys had complained of low levels of pay, difficulty of getting leave, racial discrimination by British officers and abuse of physical violence by the British officers and thus the distance between the sepoys and the officers grew
