A cricket player lowers his hand while catching a ball to increase the time in which ball is caught. As times increases, the rate of change of momentum decreases, and the force acting on the hands is reduced.

b) Explain why a gun recoil when it is fired.

Before firing, both gun as well as bullet is at rest. Therefore, momentum of system is zero. As soon as a bullet is fired, it moves in forward direction. According to the law of conservation of momentum, total momentum of system remains conserved in tyhe absence of external force. So, momentum of gun and bullet after fire should remain zero. This is possible if and only if gun moves in backward direction.
