Roughage is the fibre part of ingested food and eliminating it from diet can lead to constipation.

Balanced diet provides body with all necessary calories, macro and micro nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins. Roughage is also an important part of balanced diet. Though roughage do not provide any calories to body, it adds bulk to food and helps in digestion.

Roughage or the dietary fibre is of two types:

Soluble fibre

  • All the fibre that can form gel like appearance with the stomach juices and can be digested by the microbes of large intestine constitute the soluble fibre.
  • It helps easy passage of stools ensuring proper bowel movements.

Insoluble fibre

  • All fibre that cannot be digested by enzymes of intestine come under this category.
  • Though it cannot be digested, it adds bulk to stool by thickening it up and prevent diarrhea.
  • The insoluble fibre cannot dissolve in water.

Therefore, diet lacking roughage or fibre is not a balanced diet.

Some researchers believe roughage acts as prebiotic (food for some gut microbes) to some extent.
