Given : jeepney fair is P6.50 in the first 4 kilometers

P1.50 in every succeeding kilometer

To Find : fair of a 10.5 - kilometer trip

Solution:

C represent fair

d represent  distance

C  = 6.50     if   0 < d ≤ 4

C  = 6.50 + 1.50(d - 4)    if 4 < d

= 6.50 + 1.50(d - 4)

= 6.50 + 1.5d - 6

= 1.5d + 0.5

Hence piecewise function is :

C=\left \{ {{6.5 \quad \quad 0<d\leq4} \atop {1.5d+0.5}\quad 4 < d} \right.

fair of a 10.5 - kilometer trip

10.5 >  4

Hence C = 1.5d + 0.5

C = 1.5(10.5) + 0.5

=> C = 16.25

Hence Fair is P 16.25
