x² - x - 6 = 0

x² - 3x + 2x - 6 = 0

x(x - 3) + 2(x - 3) = 0

(x - 3)(x + 2)

x² + 3x - 18 = 0

x² +6x - 3x - 18 = 0

x(x + 6) - 3(x + 6) = 0

(x + 6)(x - 3)

Here, the common factor is (x - 3)

a = 3
