Given:

9 men visited a hotel, 8 of them spent rs 4 each over their meal and the 9 th spent rs 2 more than the average of the nine.

To find:

The total money spent by them on the meal.

Solution:

As given, we have

The total number of men who visited a hotel = 9

8 persons spent Rs. 4 each over their meal.

So,

the total money spent by 8 persons

 = 8 \times 4

 = 32 \: rs.

Now,

Let the average of money spent by 9 persons = a Rs.

So,

The money spent by the 9th person = (a + 2) Rs.

Thus,

a =  \:  \frac{total  \: money \: spent \: by \: 9 \: persons}{9}

 a \: =  \frac{32 + a + 2}{9}

On solving the above, we get

9a = 32 + a + 2

8a = 34

a =  \frac{34}{8}

a = 4.25 \: rs.

So,

the money spent by the 9th person = 4.25 + 2 = 6.25 Rs.

Total money spent =

32 + 6.25 = 38.25 \: rs.

Hence, the total money spent by them on the meal is 38.25 Rs.
