• A number of maps can be found in an atlas. Geographers Mercator and Hondt were the first to publish this collection of maps as a book in the 16th century. On the front cover of their book, they pictured the mythical character Atlas holding the Earth. Since then, this map book has been referred to as an atlas.
• On a map, conventional symbols are used to represent information such as mountains, rivers, peaks, bridges, forts, airports, dams, roads, etc. using various colours, signs, and symbols. Because there isn't enough room on a map to depict the real size and shape of these things, signs and symbols are employed instead.
