9 Physics Experiment No. 8

AIM: To find the position of an image formed by a plane mirror.

APPARATUS: Drawing board, plane mirror, pins.

PROCEDURE:

1. Fix a sheet of paper to the drawing board with drawing pins.

2. Draw a line MN.

3. Place the mirror on the line MN so that the back of the mirror is on the line, as shown in the diagram.

4. Place pin O about 3 cm in front of the mirror.

5. Look into the mirror and place pin P1 so that it is in line with the image of pin O.

6. Looking into the mirror place pin P2 so that it is in line with P1 and the image of O.

7. Remove P1 and mark its position. Remove P2 and mark its position.

8. Remove the mirror.

9. Draw line AB through P1 and P2 to meet the line MN at A. Extend the line BA behind the mirror.

10. Replace the mirror on line MN.

11. Look into the mirror and place pin P3 so that it is in line with the image of pin O.

12. Looking into the mirror, place pin P4 so that it is in line with P3 and the image of O.

13. Remove P3 and mark its position. Remove P4 and mark its position.

14. Remove the mirror.

15. Draw line DC through P3 and P4 to meet the line MN at C. Extend the line DC behind the mirror.

16. Let AB and DC extended meet at the point I. I is the position of the image of O.

17. Measure OQ. This is the Object Distance.

18. Measure IQ. This is the Image Distance.

CONCLUSION: When an image is formed by a plane mirror, the object distance is equal to the image distance.
