A friend of mine lost her son Jim during the war. And several years after that her
husband too died. Going past the house one day, a boy who had been a school friend of
Jim's, noticed the mother was sitting at a window. Her sad expression disturbed him and
he thought of doing something that might help to give her back, part of what she had lost.
He called on three of Jim's old friends. When they got together, they made a secret
pact: they would be substitute sons. One by one they began casually to drop in and see her.
Often they took her out to dinner, or a play or concert -just as her own son might have
done. As the boys married, she was drawn into their family circles and became a
grandmother" as naturally as if she were a blood relation.
Until she died a few months ago, she was one of the happiest old ladies I have ever
known. Her "sons" had been succeeded in giving her family back to her.
