Awadh was an important province under the Mughals. It served as the main gateway to
trade between north India and Bengal. It also controlled the vast and fertile Gangetic
plains, which added to the prosperity of the region. After the zamindars of the province
rebelled against the Mughals and refused to pay taxes to them, the Mughal emperor
appointed Burhan-ul-Mulk Sa'adat Khan as its subadar in AD 1772. Sa'adat Khan
helped put down the rebellion of the zamindars and went on to establish his own state.
With all important offices such as subadari, faujdari, and diwani under his control,
Sa'adat khan enjoyed immense political, financial, and military powers.
