90%and 95% pure mustard oil are mixed to obtain 20 litres of a 92% pure mustard oil. how many litres of each kind of mustard oil are needed

Answer:

let x and y be the quantity of oils respectively

then by question

x+y=20 ---------1

and

90%of x + 95% of y=20%of 92

90x/100+95y/100=20/100×92

90x+ 95y= 100×20/100×92

90x+95y= 20×92

90x+95y= 1840 ---------2

multiplying eqn 1 by 95 and eqn 2 by 1 we get

95x+95y=1900 -----3

90x+95y=1840 ------4

subtracting eqn 3 from 4 we get

5x=60

x=60/5

x=12

putting the value of x in eqn 1

12+y=20

y=20-12

y= 8

hence the quantity of 90% pure mustard oil is 12 liters and the qyantity of 95% pure mustard oil is 8 liters.
