Let the total number of runners be x.

Those who completed are 90% hence :

= 0.9x

Men = 30% of those who completed.

= 0.3 × 0.9x = 0.27x

0.27x = 270

x = 270/0.27 = 1000

x = 1000

therefore :

1000 runners started the race.
