Carl Woese divided the kingdom Monera into two domains - Archaea and Bacteria.

Explanation:

  1. Carl Woese introduced the Three Domain Classification in 1990.
  2. The Kingdom Monera ( from the previous Five Kingdom Classification by Whittaker in 1969) was divided into two domains on the basis of differences in signature sequences of 16S/18S rRNA genes of archaebacteria and eubacteria as follows -
  • Domain Archaea - It contains the early prokaryotic organisms which live in extreme environments like hot springs, acid lakes, etc. It contains one kingdom- Kingdom Archaebacteria.
  • Domain Bacteria- This domain contains typical prokaryotes which lack membrane bound organelles. It constitutes one kingdom only- Kingdom Eubacteria.

Because there is a  total of 6 kingdoms in this classification, as compared to the previous Five Kingdom Classification, it is also called Six Kingdom Classification.

The kingdom Monera was further divided by Carl Woese into 2 kingdoms.

Some informations :

1. In the year 1990, Carl Woese divided the kingdom named Monera into 2 domains. These domains are Archea and Bacteria.

2. The early prokaryotic type of organisms which were mostly found in hot springs and acidic places were included in the domain archea.

3. The other domain named bacteria consisted typical type of prokaryotic organisms. This organisms did not have any membrane surrounded organelles.

This classification is termed as three domain classification.
