Given,

Pay for 5 statistical clerks \[ = 22000Rs.\]

Pay for two statistical analysts \[ = 50000Rs.\]

Pay to senior statistician/ owner \[ = 270000Rs.\]

Solution,

Total number of employees,

\[\begin{array}{l} = 5 + 2 + 1\\ = 8\end{array}\]

Total salary paid by company,

\[\begin{array}{l} = 5 \times 22000 + 2 \times 50000 + 270000\\ = 480000Rs.\end{array}\]

Average of salary,

\[\begin{array}{l} = \frac{{480000}}{8}\\ = 60000\end{array}\]

Here average salary is \[60000Rs.\] There are 5 statistical clerks, 2 statistical analysts whose salary is less than average salary.

Hence number of employees earning less than the mean salary is 7.

The correct option is (d), i.e. 7.
