∴ $999^2$

= $(1000-1)^2$

= $1000^2$ - 2 × 1000 × 1 + $1^2$ [ ∵ $(a-b)^{2} =a^{2} -2ab+b^2$ ]

= 1000000 - 2000 + 1

= 998, 000 + 1

= 998,001

∴ $999^2$ = 998,001
