The author's grandfather bought a baby monkey for 5 rupees from a Tonga driver. Grandfather named it TOTO. The author's grandmother didn't like the presence of a bird or animal. This was the reason that grandfather kept the secret of Toto from his wife. Grandfather and the author put Toto in a closet. Toto was fastened to a peg in the wall. But Toto broke open the chain and also tore to pieces the author's school blazer. It proved to be a mischievous monkey.
Keeping in views the mischievous nature of Toto, he was transferred to the servants' quarter where other pets were kept. But here also Toto created nuisance. He did not let other pets to sleep. Grandfather took Toto along with him to Saharanpur where he went to take his pension. He was kept in a big black canvas kit bag. They were going by train. When the ticket examiner came, he thrust out his nose. He grinned at the ticket examiner. The ticket examiner charged 3 rupees for taking Toto in the train.
Author's granny finally a accepted Toto. He was kept in a stable with Nana, a donkey. Both became friends. Toto enjoyed taking bath in warm water. One day, he wanted to test the warmth of boiling water in the kitchen so he jumped into kettle. It was author's granny who saved Toto from death.
He became mischievous day by day. and caused many problems. And, family faced a lot of losses. So, finally Toto was sold to the same Tonga driver
