A 1.25g sample of octane (C H18) is burnt in excess of oxygen in a bomb
calorimeter. The temperature of the calorimeter rises from 294.05 to 300.78K.
If heat capacity of the calorimeter is 8.93 kJ K". Find the heat transferred to
calorimeter.

Answer:
Mass of octane, m = 1.25g or 0.00125kg
Heat capacity, C = 8.93kJK
Change in temperature ∆T = 300.78 - 294.05 = 6.73K
Heat transferred, Q = m C∆T
= 0.00125 × 8.93 × 6.73
= 0.075kJ
Enthalpy of combustion is enthalpy of reaction. In reaction 1 mole of octane is used. So, enthalpy of 1 mole of octane can be calculated as follows:
For 1.25g heat transferred is 0.075kJ
For 1 mole or 114g of octane heat transferred will be 0.075/1.25 × 114
= 6.84kJ
I hope this will be help you.
