A 1.5m wide footpath runs along the fence outside a park 40 m long and 30 m wide.
What is the area of the footpath

length of the park = l = 40 m

width of the park = b = 30 m

area of park = l × b

= 40 × 30

= 1200 sq m

width of footpath = 1.5 m

footpath is on both sides of park

therefore

length of park with footpath = 40 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 43 m

width of the park with footpath = 30 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 33 m

area of park with footpath = l × b

= 43 × 33

= 1419 sq m

area of footpath = area of park with footpath - area of park without footpath

= 1419 - 1200

= 219 sq m
