Given

A 10 kg mass hangs from a spring that has the spring constant 535 N/m.

To Find

The position of the end of the spring away from its rest position.

Solving

As we know,

F = kx ( Spring Force )

where

k = Spring Constant

x = Position of End of Spring

So, we need to calculate value of x.

As we can read that mass is hanging, a force equivalent to Mg will act downwards.

And as we know, spring force is an opposing force. Spring Force will act upwards.

As block is in equilibrium,

kx = Mg

535 N/m * x = 10kg( 9.8 m/s² )

x = 98 / 535

x = 0.183 metres.

Answer

The position of the end of the spring away from its rest position is

0.183 metres.
