let the distance between foot of ladder from the wal be BC

by Pythagoras

AC^2= AB^2 + BC^2

10^2= 9.9^2 +BC^2

Therefore

100-98.01= BC^2

so, BC^2 = 1.99

therefor, BC=1.4 m
