Given that,

  • Mass of the hammer = 12 kg
  • Velocity of the hammer = 13.2 m/s
  • Time taken for the nail to stop = 0.005 seconds.
  • Force on the nail = ?
  • Impulse on the nail = ?

Let's calculate the momentum of the nail :

⇒ Momentum = Mass × velocity

⇒ Momentum = 12 kg × 13.2 m/s

⇒ Momentum = 158.4 Ns.

Let's calculate the Force :

⇒ Force = Momentum/Time

⇒ Force = 158.4 Ns/0.005 sec

⇒ Force = 31680 N.

Impulse on the nail :

⇒ Impulse = Force × Time

⇒ Impulse = 31680 N × 0.005 s

⇒ Impulse = 158.4 Ns

Hope this helps you.
