Impulse is change in momentum = Δp

Momentum = mass × velocity

Δp = mΔv ..... i hope u know 'Δ' means change.

Therefore, Impulse = m(v2 - v1)

= 1200(30 - 20)

= 12000 N/sec

Given: mass = 1200kg

           initial velocity - u = 20m/s

           final velocity - v = 30m/s

To Find: Impulse - I =?

Solution:

Formula used:

  • Momentum - p = mv
  • Impulse = final momentum - initial momentum
  • i.e. I = pf - pi
  • I = mv -mu
  • I = m (v - u)

Applying the above formula:

I = m(v - u)

I = 1200 ( 30 - 20 )

I = 1200 × 10

I = 12000N.s

Hence, the impulse experienced by the car = 12000N.s
