A 13 feet ladder is placed 5 feet away from a wall. The distance from the ground straight up to the top of the wall is 13 feet. Will the ladder reach the top of the wall?

distance between ground to top of wall = 13 feet

to find: whether ladder will reach the top of the wall

the ground, wall and the ladder forms a right triangle

applying pythagoras theorem,

hypotenuse² = base² + height²

base = 5 feet, hypotenuse = 13 feet

height² = 13² - 5² = 144

height = √144 = 12 feet

the ladder will reach 12 feet above the ground level

it will not reach the top of the wall

for the ladder to reach the top of the wall , length of the ladder should be √(13² +5²) = √194 = 13.92 feet
