A 150gm bullet is fired from 15 kg gun with the velocity of 1000m/s What is the velocity of the recoil of the gun?

Given that,

  • Mass of bullet = 160 grams (M1)
  • Velocity of the gun = 1000 m/s (V1)
  • Mass of gun = 15 kg = 15000 grams (M2)
  • Recoil velocity of the gun = ? (V2)

According to law of conservation of linear momentum,

  • M1V1 = M2V2

According to Newton's third lae of motion,

  • M1V1 = -M2V2
  • -V2 = M1V1/M2
  • -V2 = 160 g × 1000 m/s / 15000 g
  • -V2 = 106.6 m/s
  • V2 = 106.6 m/s

Therefore, the recoil Velocity of the gun is 106.6 m/s
